From the Desk of NSS Programme Officer

The National Service Scheme of Sudhiranjan Lahiri Mahavidyalaya has long and glorious history. It has started its journey in 1971-72 by opening a unit in order to mark its presence felt in the community development process as well as inculcate the spirit of serving the society among the students. In the subsequent period another two additional units have to be opened with a view to complying with the rising demand from the student community for being a part of social service. During its first four decades of journey it has imprinted its contribution to varied fields, particularly in the field of plantation programme it has touched the zenith; a number of one lakh saplings were raised in the College campus, some distributed among the local people and some planted in the roadside and College campus. However during the last five years there has been a change in its structural orientation as well as level of activities. In order to bring more affiliated Colleges under the umbrella of NSS, the University of Kalyani has limited the number of NSS unit of our College from three to one w.e.f 2015-16 academic session. During the last five years the focus of NSS activity has been on creating tangible assets in the College campus. So a Herbal Garden consisting of around 25 species of herbals, Cactus & Foliage Garden, Rain Water Harvesting Project, Open Stage measuring 12 feet x 8 feet and Brick Path measuring 85 feet x 3.5 feet connecting the Herbal Garden have been created by the NSS volunteers in their normal and special camp activities. In 2016-17 our 18 volunteers participated in State and National level NSS activities such as Republic Day Camp, Adventure Camp, National Youth Festival and National Integration Camp. Our volunteer Jayanta Paul was the 2nd Commandant in RD Parade in New Delhi last year. Our Volunteers secured 1st position in the Idea Generation Competition in the Digital India Workshop held in the University last year. Mr Arindam Chakraborty, NSS Programme Officer of the College was awarded the Best Programme Officer in Nadia District by the University in 2014-15. So the NSS Unit of the College has been making its presence felt not only in the community development process but also in the State and National Level NSS activities.
